chapter seventeen

Going to Las Vegas with Juni and her older brother was hardly the way that Sean had pictured returning to Sin City, but what could he say? He was apparently a sucker for punishment.

He tossed his clothes into a duffel bag after Maggie and his younger cousins had carefully folded them. “I don’t know how long this is going to take. We’ll stay someplace cheap unless Juni gets comped somewhere.”

Maggie was lounging in an old recliner near the door. “You know the girls folded those nicely for you.”

“And all I have is a duffel bag, so they’re going to get wrinkled.” He rolled his eyes. “I told you they didn’t need to wash my laundry.”

“Well, they’re being punished, so I told them they had to.”

He glanced up. “For what?”

Maggie waved a hand. “I’ll fill you in when you get back. I already talked to the school about it. It’s taken care of, but they’re going to be doing a lot of chores. Anything you need done at the trailer?”

“They know how to polish wheels?”

She smiled. “They can learn.”

Sean sat on the sofa and looked at his sister. “You’re good at this.”

She frowned. “What?”

“Managing these kids. Keeping them on track. Riding herd on ’em.”

She shrugged. “Someone has to do it. I’m going to talk to the old man while you’re gone so I can try to pry family history out of him, but that’ll probably just piss him off more.”

“Do what you can.” Sean rubbed his hands over his face. “I already called Lake about moving some of my personal stuff into the storage area in my garage in Laguna. He thinks I should be able to get some renters in there within a month.”

“See? Told you he’d be good at it.”

“He might be stealing my speakers, but yeah, I think it’ll work. For now.” And his house—the one place that had been his sanctuary—would be invaded by strangers looking to party in Laguna Beach.

Maggie could read his expression. “It’s only temporary. As soon as this Lobo situation is dealt with, you can go home and get back to your life. Hook up with the chief’s sister and go on international adventures together.”

He glanced at her. “Yeah, right.”

Maggie rolled her eyes. “Why not? Stop being a martyr, you asshole. We don’t want your life here, okay?” She gave him a toothy grin, her canines just a little bit extended. “We really want your money more.”

Sean couldn’t stop the snort. “I swear—”

“You don’t want to be here.” Her voice was blunt. “You’re dying to get away. It’s fine. We don’t take it personally. You just don’t have the stomach for small-town life. I’ll take care of things, okay? I’m not a stupid kid anymore. We were doing okay before you came back.”

He stared at the floor. “I always thought Marcus…”

“Marcus would have been better than me.” Her voice had lost none of the sharpness. “You’re goddamn right. I thought he was going to take over the family too. And yeah, he would have been the best.
